Magazines that pay more than $50 (3885 INR) for Short Stories

They say writing is an uphill task, which it definitely is, but so is finding the right place to publish your work. Although there are many places to publish short works of fiction, the monetary gain is often zero to nothing. So here is a list of sites that pay more than 50$ aka 4000 INR (almost) for short stories, their submission periods, and guidelines.

1. Threepenny Review

Threepenny review is an American literary magazine that accepts stories, articles, table talk pieces, and poems. They seek original works which have never been published; they also do not consider simultaneous submissions. Stories submitted to this magazine must be limited to 4000 words or less. The one advantage this magazine holds above others and why I am partial to it other than the pay is their quick response time. The response time can be from two days to two months which is relatively fast compared to many other sites and magazines that may take up to six months to reply. I once got a reply from them in three days.
The response time for Threepenny Review is 2 days to 2 months.

Payment- $400

When to Submit- 1st January to 31st April

2. Chestnut Review

Chestnut Review is a literary magazine for, as their motto says, “Stubborn artists.” They accept unpublished works in English. Chestnut review accepts simultaneous submissions as long as it is specified in Submittable. There is a submission fee for prose but not for Flash, but the amount paid to the writer is the same. As per their guidelines, all prose works must be of 5000 words or less and not more. Flash fiction is within 1000 words.

Chestnut review will get back to the author within 30 days and will return the submission fees if the period is longer but not the feedback fees.

Payment- $120

3. The New Yorker

The New Yorker is an American magazine that started in 1925 and has been publishing many forms of writing, including fiction, ever since. Although there is no specified word limit, keeping it below 10000 words and more than 1500 words is better. New Yorker replies within 90 days of submission. This magazine receives many submissions in many categories and hence will not reply unless they are interested in publishing your article.

They clearly specify that your piece is to be considered rejected if you don’t hear from them after 90 days. They accept submissions in the form of PDFs.

Payment8 cents per word

Himal Southasian is a news magazine currently based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They publish original and previously unpublished pieces. Himal Southasian accepts simultaneous submissions but must be informed by the writer beforehand. The word limit is 2000-4000 words.

Although the pay is reasonable for this magazine, the process of sending your submissions isn’t as simple as others as you have to pitch your ideas to editorial@himalmag.com  within 300-600 words, including the outline of your article or story and reason they should consider your piece. Once the pitch is accepted, you will be asked to send your work in PDF FORMAT.

Flash Fiction online accepts stories of all genres, including speculative and literary fiction, but they do not accept simultaneous submissions.
